Ashok Sharma Biography: From Family Sacrifices to India’s Fastest Bowler

Whether it is financial hardships, family sacrifices or his ability to bowl at 154 km/h, Ashok Sharma’s journey has been extraordinary and one of the most exciting prospects for the Indian fast-bowling team.

Ashok Sharma’s journey from the outskirts of Jaipur to the international stage is a testament to his determination, sacrifice, and perseverance, making him a new exciting talent for India’s search for genuine pace.

The young fast bowler recently got his India debut after impressing with his raw speed in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ashok is already considered one of India’s fastest bowlers and is now eyeing another record – becoming the first bowler to regularly cross the 160 km/h barrier.

Family sacrifice laid the foundation

It all started with an incredible sacrifice by Ashok’s family.

Both brothers, Akshay Sharma and him, had aspirations of becoming professional fast bowlers from a young age. But the family had only a limited amount of money, and so they could only support one of the two careers in cricket.

Akshay felt that his younger brother was capable of doing more than him, so he gave his brother Ashok a chance to continue his cricket career. Their father was a hard worker, delivering newspapers and driving for a local publication, and he did everything he could to help the family make their dream come true, even in the face of financial difficulties.

That tough choice would alter Ashok’s life one day.

Coach spotted raw pace

Ashok’s breakthrough has come during the Under-16 trials in Rajasthan when former Rajasthan cricketer Vivek Yadav spotted the natural pace of the teenager.

Ashok’s talent impressed Yadav, who encouraged him to join Aravalli Cricket Academy, even helping him continue training at the academy despite financial constraints.

His older brother used to travel long distances so Ashok could attend the practice sessions and later the academy provided him with a place to stay for free.

The chance gave the young pacer a chance to concentrate solely on his game.

Transforming into a genuine fast bowler

Ashok had great speed but his coaches had a lot of work to do to develop his technique and consistency.

Under Jagsimran Singh, he improved his bowling action and his fitness and strength were totally transformed.

Special attention was given to:

  • Building muscle strength
  • Becoming more accurate with the new ball
  • Increasing pace without sacrificing control
  • Developing accuracy with the new ball
  • Learning effective hard-length bowling

The improvements turned Ashok from a naturally quick youngster into a complete fast bowler capable of troubling quality batters.

Setbacks tested his determination

Success did not arrive immediately.

Ashok played for Rajasthan in the Under-19 age category, but failed to make an impact in his first few games and was dropped.

The next few years were equally disappointing, with few prospects at the top level.

At times, Ashok even thought of giving up cricket as he felt he was not progressing and had been left disappointed several times.

His coaches and family, however, kept encouraging him to be patient.

IPL opportunities changed everything

The highlight of his career came when he competed in the Red Bull Speedster tournament, paving the way for training with IPL teams.

He played for the Rajasthan Royals as a net bowler and later got an IPL contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He didn’t play a match for a season but that helped him to keep developing with international players.

His best performance eventually came with Gujarat Titans, where he was picked up by the coaching staff right from the get-go for his raw pace.

At first considered as a replacement, Ashok was soon instrumental in making his way to the playing XI.

Pace grabs national attention

Ashok was one of the biggest names to be discussed in IPL 2026 as he consistently bowled above 150 kmph.

One of his deliveries clocked 154.2 kmph, making him one of the quickest bowlers India has produced.

He was a threat in the death overs with his pace and effective slower balls and yorkers.

The outstanding displays led to his selection in India A and his first call-up to the senior team.

His fast growth had been a result of years of hard work which had not received much recognition in the cricket world outside Rajasthan.

More than just raw speed

Ashok is considered as a pace bowler, but he has been working hard to become a complete T20 bowler.

Prior to IPL 2026, he has dedicated a lot of time to refining his:

  • Yorkers
  • Slower deliveries
  • Death-over execution
  • Tactical variations

His maiden IPL dismissal came courtesy of a well-disguised slower ball, indicating that his game is far from just about the sheer pace.

Coaches feel that he is a more dangerous bowler in international cricket because of his eagerness to learn.

Dream of touching 160 km/h

Ashok has been no secret about his desire to become the fastest bowler India has ever produced.

His coaches are confident that he has the physical qualities and delivery to break the 160 km barrier which is not an official record for an Indian bowler.

The young pacer has seen a lot of international action, developed his fitness and has had regular high level opportunities and many feel he has just begun to reach his potential.

India’s newest pace sensation

Ashok Sharma’s remarkable rise is one of Indian cricket’s most inspiring success stories in recent years.

His story is one of sacrifice, hardship, and even becoming one of the fastest bowlers in the nation, all of which are testament to the determination needed to reach the highest level.

Ashok is now a representative of India on the international platform and has the chance to become the leader of the next generation of India’s fast bowlers and his ultimate ambition to consistently bowl at 160 kmph.
