Jaffna Kings Franchise Agreement Terminated as SLC Takes Full Control During LPL 2026

The Jaffna Kings franchise owners defaulting on their financial obligations in the Lanka Premier League 2026 will be handed over to Sri Lanka Cricket and Innovative Production Group for operation.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Innovative Production Group (IPG) have officially terminated the Jaffna Kings franchise agreement due to the franchise owners’ failure to meet their financial obligations under the agreement.

The defending champions will remain in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 without any changes in the team, tournament format or schedule, even after the change of ownership.

Franchise rights transferred to SLC and IPG

Since the end of the franchise agreement, all commercial and operational rights of the Jaffna Kings has been returned to Innovative Production Group, the organizer of the Lanka Premier League.

In partnership with Sri Lanka Cricket, IPG has now taken full charge of the franchise for the rest of the tournament.

The transfer helps to keep the team and staff prepared for the upcoming season.

Financial obligations led to termination

The official announcement said the owners of the franchise could not meet their financial obligations as detailed in the agreement with the tournament organizers.

The agreement was ended to maintain the integrity and stability of the Lanka Premier League and for the continuity of the competition.

Team to continue without disruption

Although the ownership structure has changed, fans will not notice any difference on the field.

The Jaffna Kings will play under the same name and the same team, head coach, player contracts and match schedule will be followed.

All the logistical and operational issues are being taken care of smoothly to ensure that there is no disruption during the ongoing season, tournament organizers said.

IPG reassures players and fans

IPG Chief Executive Officer Anil Mohan admitted that the decision to end the franchise agreement was a tough one, but said that keeping the credibility of the tournament intact was the top priority.

He said Sri Lanka Cricket and IPG had responded swiftly to the situation to ensure that the Jaffna Kings do not miss out on the tournament and do not impact any of the players, coaches, commercial partners or the fans.

The officials also reiterated their pledge to organise another successful season of Lanka Premier League.

Strong start despite off-field issues

But, the Bhanuka Rajapaksa-led Jaffna Kings have started the tournament with a positive note despite the uncertainty on the sidelines.

The team has secured two victories in its first three games, securing a playoff spot early in the LPL 2026 season.

The management change is behind the scenes and players are expected to maintain their focus on cricket.

LPL 2026 continues as scheduled

The Lanka Premier League 2026 kicked off on July 17 and will end on August 8.

The ownership changes have been confirmed by the tournament organisers that they will not affect the remaining fixtures, tournament format or the playoff schedule.

As Sri Lanka Cricket and IPG now run the franchise, the spotlight is now on what happens on the pitch as Jaffna Kings chase their third LPL championship.
