Former Assam and Railways player Subhadeep Ghosh has been named the new fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. He is replacing T Dilip, who was not re-signed after India’s visit to Zimbabwe.
The 57-year-old Ghosh will take over his new job with India’s next two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August. The appointment brings another proven coach to Gautam Gambhir’s camp as India’s coaching team continues to change.
Ghosh takes over from T Dilip
Ghosh has replaced T Dilip, who had been India’s fielding coach before the BCCI opted not to renew his contract. Ghosh is now responsible for the team’s fielding duties in preparation for a crucial Test duty in Sri Lanka.
Ghosh is a former first-class cricketer who played 17 matches for Assam and Railways from 1994 to 2004. He then shifted to coaching and has gained a wealth of experience in various levels of Indian cricket.
Extensive coaching experience
Ghosh has previously served as head coach for the Assam senior men’s team and is also a former member of the National Cricket Academy. He has coached Indian A and the Indian women’s team, and has experience with players in various configurations.
He also has experience in the Indian Premier League, coaching the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. He has a diverse career at domestic, international and franchise cricket levels which has helped him build his name in Indian cricket.
Latest addition to Gambhir’s support staff
Ghosh is the latest member of Gautam Gambhir’s team after the likes of T Dilip and Ryan ten Doeschate left the club. The present coaching staff comprises of batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel.
He will be concentrating on enhancing India’s fielding skills first before the Sri Lanka Tests. The team is going through a crucial stage of the Test series and Ghosh will be expected to closely work with the players on catching, ground fielding and overall athleticism.
Assam Cricket Association welcomes appointment
The Assam Cricket Association welcomed Ghosh’s appointment and emphasized on his coaching successes in Indian teams and different age groups.
The association said Ghosh’s selection was a pride for Assam cricket as it is a big achievement for the state cricket fraternity. It also commended his commitment and skill and termed his career as an inspiration to young cricketers and coaches.
The appointment of Ghosh is another significant development in his coaching career and his maiden stint with the senior Indian team will be in the 2-Test series against Sri Lanka.
