Former India captain Ajinkya Rahane will kick off a new chapter in his T20 career as he joins Amsterdam Flames as their marquee player for the first season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL).
The signing comes days after Rahane announced his retirement from international and IPL cricket, which now seems to be his focus is overseas franchise cricket. He will make his debut in the T20 league outside of India when he joins the Amsterdam-based franchise.
Rahane brings extensive T20 experience
Rahane is known for his Test cricket prowess but has also had a lot of experience in the shortest format. In his career, he has played 308 T20 matches and scored 7,968 runs with an average of 30.29 and a strike rate of 126.77.
He has scored 56 half-centuries and two centuries in the T20 format, making him a consistent performer in the format. Rahane has also played in high-pressure domestic and franchise situations over the past few seasons, which would be a great asset to the Amsterdam Flames.
The ETPL opportunity will give Rahane an additional avenue to demonstrate his abilities, as well as a leadership opportunity in a new franchise.
Rahane excited by European cricket opportunity
Rahane said that the project of the Amsterdam Flames was very interesting for him as it is aiming at contributing to the development of cricket in Europe.
“Cricket has given me so much and I have always felt that players have a responsibility to come out stronger than they have come in.
He also said that Europe is one of the most promising areas for the game and was looking forward to playing a role in helping the Flames become a successful franchise.
Rahane also spoke about the need to motivate young cricketers and help develop the game outside the traditional cricketing countries.
Steve Waugh welcomes Rahane
Amsterdam Flames have recruited Rahane into a team that boasts a number of international names. Former Australia captain Steve Waugh, who is the co-founder and Chief Cricket Officer of the franchise, was especially happy with the signing.
Waugh said Rahane is a player who is a mix of skill, resilience, humility and leadership. He also highlighted the former India captain’s calmness in difficult situations.
Waugh said Rahane experience and character will be crucial as the Amsterdam Flames look to build up a strong reputation as one of the top cricket clubs in Europe.

A new opportunity after international retirement

His transition to overseas franchise cricket might give him the opportunity to play competitive T20 cricket and coach younger players.
The signing of Rahane is a big statement of intent for Amsterdam Flames as well. His foreign name might bring more attention to the franchise and the broader European cricket initiative.
