Umran Malik Profile

Early Life and Background

Umran Malik was born on 22 November 1999 in Jammu and Kashmir. He developed an interest in cricket while growing up and gradually attracted attention because of his natural ability to generate extreme pace. Unlike many established Indian fast bowlers, Umran journey to professional cricket was not built around a long international junior career. His raw speed eventually became his biggest asset and helped him progress through the Jammu and Kashmir cricket system.

His breakthrough came when his pace caught the attention of the Sunrisers Hyderabad setup. He initially became associated with the franchise as a net bowler before getting an opportunity in the IPL. That opportunity changed the direction of his career and turned him into one of the most exciting young fast bowlers in Indian cricket.

IPL Debut and Breakthrough

Umran Malik made his IPL debut on 3 October 2021, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders in Dubai. He immediately attracted attention because of the speed at which he bowled. Even though he was relatively inexperienced, his ability to repeatedly cross the 150 km/h mark made him stand out from many other Indian bowlers.

His real breakthrough came during the IPL 2022 season. Umran became a regular part of the SRH bowling attack and produced several outstanding spells. He took his first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket against Gujarat Titans, finishing with 5/25. He also recorded 4/28 against Punjab Kings during the same season.

Umran performances earned him the Emerging Player of the Tournament award in IPL 2022. His pace became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament, and he finished the season with 22 wickets in 14 matches.

Fastest Ball by Umran Malik

One of the defining moments of Umran Malik career came during IPL 2022 when he bowled a delivery at 157 km/h against Delhi Capitals on 5 May 2022. The delivery became one of the fastest recorded in IPL history and reinforced his reputation as India premier express-pace prospect.

Although the delivery itself went for a boundary, the speed demonstrated why Umran had attracted so much attention. He also regularly bowled in the 150–155 km/h range during his breakthrough IPL season.

International Debut

Umran Malik performances in the IPL earned him a call-up to the Indian national team. He made his T20I debut on 26 June 2022 against Ireland at Malahide. His international debut marked another important step in his rapid rise from a domestic prospect to an India player.

Later that year, Umran made his ODI debut against New Zealand on 25 November 2022 at Auckland. He picked up two wickets in his first ODI and showed that his pace could also trouble batters in the 50-over format.

However, his international career has not developed as quickly as his IPL breakthrough suggested. As of September 2026, Umran has played 10 ODIs and eight T20Is for India, while he is still waiting for his Test debut. His most recent international appearances came in 2023.

Umran Malik International Stats

As of September 2026, Umran Malik international bowling numbers remain as follows:

His ODI record includes 13 wickets from 10 matches, while he has taken 11 wickets in eight T20I appearances. His best ODI figures are 3/57, while his best T20I figures are 3/48.

IPL Career and Statistics

Umran spent the first part of his IPL career with Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2021 through 2024. His best IPL season was undoubtedly 2022, when he established himself as a genuine strike bowler.

His IPL career has since been affected by injuries and limited opportunities. According to the latest available records, Umran has played 26 IPL matches and taken 29 wickets, with best figures of 5/25. His IPL bowling average is around 26.10, with an economy rate of approximately 9.33.

These numbers highlight the contrast in Umran IPL career: his wicket-taking ability has been impressive, but his economy rate has remained an area that he has needed to improve.

Umran Malik IPL Team and Price

Umran Malik represented Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2021 to 2024. After SRH released him ahead of the 2025 season, he entered the IPL auction and was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹75 lakh.

He was subsequently retained by KKR at the same ₹75 lakh value for IPL 2026. The latest IPL auction records list Umran as a KKR player at ₹75 lakh.

Umran move to KKR represented a new chapter in his career. However, he was ruled out of IPL 2025 because of injury, with KKR bringing in Chetan Sakariya as his replacement.

Umran Malik in IPL 2026

Umran Malik remained part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for IPL 2026, but the latest available IPL records indicate that he did not feature in an IPL 2026 match. His most recent IPL appearance remains the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians on 27 March 2024.

This period has been particularly challenging for Umran because injuries interrupted his playing rhythm. After his absence from IPL 2025, he returned to domestic cricket and represented Jammu & Kashmir during the 2025-26 season.

Domestic Cricket Comeback

Umran returned to competitive domestic cricket during the 2025-26 season. He represented Jammu & Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, where he took six wickets in five matches. His best performance during the tournament was 3/37.

He also featured for Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy during the 2025-26 season. His return to domestic cricket was important because regular match practice is crucial for a fast bowler who has experienced repeated injury interruptions.

Jersey Number

Umran Malik wears jersey number 24. The number has become associated with the fast bowler during his appearances for India and his franchise career.

Playing Style

Umran Malik biggest strength has always been his raw pace. He is capable of generating high speeds without relying entirely on swing or conventional movement. His skiddy action and aggressive length can make him particularly dangerous when he finds rhythm.

His bowling arsenal includes fast short balls, hard-length deliveries and yorkers. When his control is good, his pace can make even well-set batters uncomfortable. His ability to bowl several deliveries above 145 km/h is particularly valuable in T20 cricket.

At the same time, consistency has remained an important area of development. Fast bowling at extreme speeds requires excellent control, fitness and workload management. The relatively high T20 economy rate of Umran demonstrates why improving accuracy and variation has been important for his development.

Injuries and Career Challenges

Injuries have played a significant role in the recent phase of Umran Malik career. He was ruled out of IPL 2025 after suffering an injury, and KKR replaced him with Chetan Sakariya.

Before his return to domestic cricket, Umran had endured a lengthy period away from competitive cricket. Reports during this period highlighted recurring fitness problems, including issues involving his hip and hamstring. These setbacks interrupted the momentum he had built during his breakthrough years.

For an express fast bowler, maintaining fitness is particularly important because bowling consistently at extreme speeds puts considerable physical demands on the body. A successful return therefore depends not only on pace but also on workload management, strength and bowling consistency.

Umran Malik Major Achievements

Umran Malik has already achieved several important milestones during his relatively young career. He became one of the fastest Indian bowlers in IPL history after recording a delivery of 157 km/h against Delhi Capitals in 2022.

He also won the Emerging Player of the Tournament award in IPL 2022 after taking 22 wickets in 14 matches. His five-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans remains one of the standout performances of his IPL career.

His return to domestic cricket during the 2025-26 season was an important step. He took six wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and continued working toward regaining his best rhythm.

KKR decision to retain him for IPL 2026 at ₹75 lakh also kept him within the franchise system, although he did not appear in the 2026 IPL according to the latest available match records.

Conclusion

His 157 km/h delivery, 22-wicket IPL 2022 season, five-wicket haul and Emerging Player award established him as a special pace talent. However, injuries, inconsistency and limited international opportunities have slowed his progress in recent years.

As of 2026, Umran is with Kolkata Knight Riders, having been retained for ₹75 lakh, and continues to represent Jammu & Kashmir in domestic cricket. His future will depend on how successfully he manages his fitness, improves his control and turns his extraordinary pace into consistent performances.
