Bangladesh Cricket Board’s grassroots program is gaining momentum with former Bangladesh captain signing a two-year contract to lead the youth development.
Khaled Mahmud, who was appointed as a consultant for age-group cricket on a two-year contract by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has returned to the board.
The appointment brings back Mahmud to the BCB where he had held several significant positions and had made a significant contribution to the development of young cricketers throughout the country.
Mahmud takes charge of youth development
Mahmud said they had been talking with BCB President Tamim Iqbal about the job and he was happy to take the chance to work with the emerging talent of Bangladesh.
The former all-rounder has always had a passion for youth development, having coached age-group cricketers and grassroots programmes for much of his coaching career.
He also said that the new role will enable him to play a part in the future of Bangladesh cricket in nurturing the next generation of players.
Successful record in age-group cricket
In the past, Mahmud has had great success in leading the BCB’s development efforts.
He led the BCB Game Development Unit when Bangladesh secured the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2020, which marked the country’s rise to a new level of strength at the youth level.
He has been recognised for his efforts in discovering and developing young talents, and has become one of the most experienced development coaches in Bangladesh.
BCB places trust in experienced mentor
Bangladesh Cricket Board feels that Mahmud is an experienced Mentor and is the best fit to lead the age-group system of the country.
Board officials believe he has a good grasp of player development and look forward to him contributing to the development of the pathway from junior cricket to the national team.
The move is part of the BCB’s ongoing efforts to invest in player development and nurture a more robust talent pool.
Experienced administrator and coach
Apart from coaching, Mahmud has also held various administrative posts in the Bangladesh Cricket Board, such as chairman of the Game Development Committee.
He has also served as team director for the Bangladesh men’s national team in various ICC tournaments, where he has gained leadership experience.
His coaching, management and administrative skills are likely to help the young cricketers of Bangladesh in the coming two years.
Focus on the future
Bangladesh is looking to further develop its youth cricket system and nurture more talents to compete at the international level with Mahmud in the BCB setup.
As the country continues to invest in the future of its national teams, the former captain will now be involved in player development, mentorship, and assisting Bangladesh in furthering the success of its age-group initiatives.
