ICC admits Mauritius as 111th member and places France Cricket on notice following key decisions taken during the ICC’s annual meetings in Edinburgh.
Mauritius has become the 111th member of the International Cricket Council, extending the sport’s reach around the world. Meanwhile, the ICC board put France Cricket “on notice” for violating the membership requirements for the organisation. No immediate sanctions were called for against France.
During these meetings, other key results achieved were:
- USD 12.82 million loan for Cricket West Indies to facilitate cricket development in the region approved.
- Instituting a clear set of reinstatement criteria for suspended member Cricket Canada.
- Expressing satisfaction with the progress Sri Lanka Cricket has been making towards a new constitution, whilst keeping restrictions on the participation of Sri Lanka Cricket in ICC board meetings until elections are held.
France Cricket’s inclusion on notice is a clear message on adherence to ICC standards. The board did not take any more actions regarding the penalties, but clarified that they would not be accepted if any further violations occurred.
Other Key Decisions
The ICC board also set up two new sub-committees to bolster governance and deal with the increasing sway of franchise cricket.
- Governance Review Committee – Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, Mohammed Moosajee, CSA vice president and Dr Ros Rivaz, ICC independent director are the chairpersons of the panel.
- Franchise Leagues Committee – Tamim Iqbal (BCB president), Rudie van Vuuren (Cricket Namibia), Richard Gould (ECB), Todd Greenberg (Cricket Australia) and Devajit Saikia.
Cricket Canada is suspended following serious lapses of its membership obligations in June. The board has now set forth certain criteria the Canadian board must adhere to in order to have the suspension lifted. Cricket Canada first had presented a full action plan hoping for a quick reinstatement.
In the meantime the board expressed confidence in the good work being done by Sri Lanka Cricket, while urging the need for fresh elections to be held as soon as possible. Until then, SLC will continue to be barred from attending ICC board meetings.
The moves are part of ICC’s mission to help enhance governance standards in all its member countries and also to expand the game by adding to its membership, such as Mauritius.
