India and Australia have played 37 T20I matches against each other, and India lead the record with 22 wins against 12 for Australia, with three matches ending in no result. The rivalry began with a World Cup semi-final in Durban in 2007, and the two teams last met in a five-match series in Australia in November 2025, which India won 2-1. This page carries the complete India vs Australia head to head in T20I record: the full results story, the World Cup meetings, the highest and lowest totals, and the batters and bowlers who own the fixture. The original record follows, and the verified update sits below.

Few rivalries in world cricket carry as much fire as India vs Australia in T20Is. From the first meeting at the 2007 T20 World Cup to the Super Eights clash at the 2024 edition in St Lucia, these two teams have produced classics in every era of the shortest format.

The numbers tell a clear story. India lead the head-to-head with 22 wins from 37 T20Is, Australia have 12 wins, and three matches have ended with no result. The most recent series, in Australia in October and November 2025, ended 2-1 to India. This page carries the complete record, the key stats and the record book of the fixture.

The timing makes this record more than a history lesson. The two teams last met in Australia in October and November 2025, and they did not meet at the T20 World Cup of 2026, where India lifted the trophy on home soil. Every number below shows how the record stands after that series and that tournament.

India and Australia have faced each other 37 times in T20 internationals. India have won 22 of those games, Australia have won 12, and three matches ended with no result. That record gives India a clear edge, and it is even stronger in ICC events, where India have won four of the six T20 World Cup meetings between the sides.

The dominance is not limited to neutral venues. India have never lost a T20I series on home soil against Australia, and they have also won three T20I series in Australia: a 3-0 sweep in 2016, a 2-1 win in 2020-21 and a 2-1 win in 2025. For more than a decade, India have found ways to beat Australia in all conditions, with spin and fearless batting doing the damage in Asia and pace and power carrying them through in Australia. For another famous rivalry told in full, read the India vs Pakistan head to head in T20.

The World Cup meetings deserve a special mention. Six times these teams have met on the biggest stage, and India have won four of them. The 2024 win in St Lucia was the most recent World Cup meeting, and it carried extra weight because it ended the Australian campaign. The teams did not meet at the T20 World Cup of 2026, and a full note on that tournament sits in the update section below. The two World Cup wins for Australia show they can rise for the occasion, which is why no fan of India will take this rivalry for granted.

Australia are far from pushovers, though. With 12 wins of their own, including a famous four-wicket chase in Mohali in 2022, they remain the only team that can match India for depth in the shortest format. The gap between them has rarely looked smaller on paper.

Earlier Meetings and the 2022 Home Series

Recent history before the 2025 series belonged to India, and the 2024 T20 World Cup Super Eight win in St Lucia, where India won by 24 runs to knock Australia out of the tournament, was the latest meeting before that series. The current last five meetings are the five matches of the 2025 series, and the update section below carries each result.

Before that, India won the home series 2-1 in September 2022. Australia struck first in Mohali with a stunning chase, but India hit back in Nagpur and sealed the series in Hyderabad with back-to-back six-wicket wins. The only other recent Australian win came in Sydney in December 2020, when the hosts defended their total to win by 12 runs and deny India a series sweep.

The pattern was clear in that period: India won the big moments. In World Cups, in deciders and in chases under pressure, the India side held nerve more often than not.

The 2022 home series showed both sides of this contest. Australia chased down a big target in Mohali to prove they can win in Indian conditions, while India answered with calm chases in Nagpur and Hyderabad. That ability to win in different ways is what makes the Indian record so strong, and it was exactly what Australia had to break when the teams met again in 2025.

Update: A 2-1 Series Win in Australia, a Home World Cup Crown, and No New Date Yet

The last meeting of the two teams came in Australia in October and November 2025, in a five-match series in Australia that rain shaped from start to finish. The opener at Manuka Oval in Canberra on 29 October was washed out, and Australia took the second match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by four wickets, bowling India out for 125. India hit back hard. At Bellerive Oval in Hobart on 2 November, Australia made 186 for 6, with Tim David scoring 74 and Marcus Stoinis 64, and India chased the target with five wickets in hand as Washington Sundar finished unbeaten on 49 from 23 balls. At Carrara Oval on the Gold Coast on 6 November, India made 167 for 8 and bowled Australia out for 119 to win by 48 runs. The finale at the Gabba in Brisbane on 8 November was abandoned with India at 52 for no loss in 4.5 overs, and India took the series 2-1. It was the fifth straight T20I series win for India over Australia. Suryakumar Yadav captained India and Mitchell Marsh led Australia, and Abhishek Sharma was named Player of the Series with 163 runs. In the washed-out finale, Abhishek Sharma also reached 1,000 runs in T20I cricket in only 28 innings, the second fastest mark by an India batter.

The teams did not meet at the T20 World Cup of 2026. India and Australia were drawn in different groups, Australia went out in the group stage after defeats against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, and India marched on to lift the trophy on home soil, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad on 8 March 2026. The title was the third T20 World Cup crown for India, after 2007 and 2024, and it means the World Cup chapter of this rivalry still stands at six meetings. India won four of them: the 2007 semi-final in Durban, the 2014 match in Mirpur, the 2016 chase in Mohali and the 2024 Super Eight match in Gros Islet. Australia won the other two, in Barbados in 2010 and in Colombo in 2012. The 2024 meeting in Gros Islet, a 24-run win for India on 24 June 2024, remains the last World Cup clash of the two teams.
