England Ex-cricketer and Kent legend to close the curtain on a legendary career of over 20 years
Joe Denly, a former England batsman, has revealed that his professional career will come to an end at the end of the 2026 domestic season, after more than 20 years of playing cricket for Kent and England.
Kent Cricket’s statement confirms the 40-year-old’s stance, thanking them for the opportunities, friendships and achievements they have had over their career.
Denly to end remarkable 22-year career
Denly, who has come up through the county’s Cricket Academy, made his first-team debut for Kent in 2004. He became one of the most reliable hitters in the county in all formats over the next 20 years.
He was a member of Kent’s 2007 Twenty20 Cup winning team and played a role in the county’s further Twenty20 Cup silverware victory when he returned from Middlesex. He has been a vital member of Kent’s squad in the Vitality Blast 2021 and the Metro Bank One-Day Cup 2022, leading the side to victory in both matches.
England career marked by resilience
Denly’s international travels were a process of perseverance and effort.
He first played for England in limited overs cricket in 2009, before being dropped from the England squad the following year. He had been in the international panel for eight years and was called up for a sensational second call up in 2018.
He made his Test debut in the Caribbean before moving onto the England team as the regular No. 3 batsman when the team was in transition.
Denly has built up his reputation as a valuable run-scorer and a reliable performer in key innings with a memorable half-century in the famous Headingley Ashes Test in 2019 when Ben Stokes made one of the greatest Test half-centuries ever.
He also scored a career-high 94 runs in England’s triumph over Australia in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.
Kent legend leaves lasting legacy
Following the end of his England career, Denly continued to be one of Kent’s most influential cricketers.
Later in 2026 he scored 5,000 runs for Kent Spitfires in the Vitality Blast making him one of the county’s all-time greats.
He also features in the top ten in the Kent Cricket Association’s list of run scorers in the tournament and is one of just a few batsmen to achieve centuries in all three formats of the game.
Denly reflects on an unforgettable journey
Denly said he was stepping down from the game and had said that professional cricket had been an amazing ride in his life and had thanked all his supporters for their help and support over the years.
Representing both Kent and England had been a privilege and the friendships, experiences and memories he had formed over the last 20 years would stick with him for life, he said.
Denly also announced that his career may be nearing its conclusion but his love for cricket is alive and kicking, with the prospect of coaching after he hangs up his boots.

Kent Director of Cricket Simon Cook said Denly had made a contribution to the county that was worthy of praise, calling him one of the modern greats of Kent Cricket.
Cook emphasized Denly’s consistency, professionalism and longevity, pointing to his impact on all forms of the game. He also expressed his gratitude to the senior batsman for his long and loyal service and assured him that his club would give him a memorable send-off at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
