Former England and Australia coach to coach Sydney Sixers men’s team on a two-year contract following a successful stint with the club.
Sydney Sixers have announced that Matthew Mott has been signed on to lead the men’s team for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season as the new head coach of the franchise, with the experienced coach signing a two-year deal.
Mott replaces James Hopes, who recently resigned from the job after taking on a dual coaching role with Queensland and the Brisbane Heat.
Mott promoted after strong Sixers stint
The 52-year-old is no stranger to the Sixers system, having served as assistant coach to the men’s team for the last two seasons.
The franchise is likely to name a new WBBL head coach in the next couple of days.
Decorated coaching career
Mott comes into the job with one of the most impressive coaching resumes in world cricket.
During his tenure as the national white-ball coach from 2022 to 2024, he led England to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022.
Excited to lead the men’s side
After his hire, Mott said he was thrilled to be in charge of the men’s team following several years in the Sixers organization.
The club’s winning culture and quality playing group make it particularly attractive and he said he is looking forward to developing on the solid foundation that has already been established.
Mott was sad to leave the women’s program, but thanked the players and support staff for their dedication and good fortune in the future BBL campaigns.
Sixers praise Mott’s experience
Sydney Sixers GM Rachael Haynes said Mott was one of the most revered T20 coaches in world cricket.
She pointed to his leadership skills, tactical expertise and the ability to create successful team environments as some of the key factors in his appointment.
Haynes also said that having different coaches for the men and women would give the two sports more stability in the long run as scheduling changes.
New era begins for Sydney Sixers
Mott joins the Sixers at a time of change for the team, as they will start the new BBL season with a new captain after Moises Henriques retired from Australian domestic cricket.
Prior to his success as a coach, Mott had played 66 first-class matches for Queensland and Victoria, scoring over 3,700 runs.
He has also coached New South Wales, Glamorgan, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Seattle Orcas and Lancashire and is one of the most experienced coaches in the modern game.
Mott has the experience and a proven track record of winning titles and building successful teams and will now look to lead the Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash League title.
