After a long wait, Washington Freedom have finally got rezoning approval for a privately funded cricket stadium in Frederick, Maryland, which will give them a home base. The Major League Cricket franchise has been looking for a suitable location in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for four years, and a recent approval has taken a big hurdle off the road.
Freedom Receive Crucial Rezoning Approval
The proposed development will include a new cricket stadium that will have a capacity of approximately 10,000 spectators on land already owned by the franchise. In their long search, Washington Freedom had narrowed down their options to 15 to 20 sites before Frederick was chosen about two years ago.
The rezoning is a major step toward the franchise’s goal of having a permanent home venue. Now, the officials of the freedom movement are hoping to take the next step in construction and get the stadium ready for the 2027 MLC season, but the franchise has yet to confirm the stadium will be ready in time.
Five-Pitch Cricket Facility Planned
The proposed site will feature a five-pitch cricket square, and the franchise is hoping to get the wicket block in place in time for the pitches to grow as natural as possible during the Washington winter. If the venue will be hosting MLC matches next summer, allowing playing surfaces to achieve a full growing cycle will increase the likelihood of having quality pitches to play on.
The stadium, if built for the 2027 campaign, would provide Major League Cricket with four stadiums to run its operations for the first time. The project would also further the league’s long-term plans for the creation of purpose-built cricket facilities in various markets in the United States.
Growing MLC Infrastructure
The stadium project of Washington Freedom is taking place at a time when Major League Cricket is being promoted with its plans for infrastructure. Los Angeles Knight Riders recently opened a new cricket ground in Pomona, providing another purpose-built venue for the competition.
The Pomona facility is also set to be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, further cementing the significance of dedicated cricket facilities in the United States. Washington Freedom’s plans could be another major part of the growing cricket scene in the country.
Freedom Strong MLC Record
A permanent home would be another significant chapter in Washington Freedom’s swift ascent in Major League Cricket. The franchise has qualified for three straight MLC finals – the first team in the competition’s history to do so.
Freedom best season was in 2024 when Ricky Ponting led them to victory. They beat the San Francisco Unicorns by 96 runs in the final to win their first MLC championship. The franchise was back in the final in 2025 and 2026, but failed to win either of those years.
Community Engagement in Frederick
Freedom work in Frederick has gone far beyond the plans for a cricket stadium. The franchise had been in contact with local people for nearly two years, and had been working to make them understand the benefits of bringing professional cricket to the area.
Open houses, presentations and meetings were held with homeowners’ associations, neighbourhood groups, Rotary clubs and the local Chamber of Commerce. After realizing the economic opportunities it could offer Frederick, the Chamber eventually became a supporter of the project.
The franchise also brought to the fore the already existing cricket community in the region. There are about five or six cricket academies in the vicinity with an estimated 400-500 children involved. Freedom worked with these academies and their families to showcase the need for good cricket facilities that already exist.
Proposed Riverfront Community Park
One of the most important elements of the project is the proposed public riverfront park. The private property is adjacent to a riverfront property that’s not open to the public, and Freedom intends to make part of it public.
Some of the amenities that might be part of the proposed park include walking and cycling trails, picnic areas, boat access, farmers markets and cultural events. The franchise has indicated that it would design, construct, fund and maintain the public riverfront area while keeping it accessible throughout the year.
This has helped the project to become a more than just a professional cricket stadium. Freedom hopes the development will offer sporting opportunities, as well as recreational space for local families and residents.
Sanjay Govil Expanding Cricket Ambitions

Washington Freedom owner Sanjay Govil has also been increasing his involvement in international cricket. He recently bought a 50 per cent stake in Welsh Fire, joining Glamorgan to create an equal stake in The Hundred.
Govil has also said he would be interested in investing in the Big Bash League if the sport in Australia decides to allow private investment in its franchises. His international cricket career is a testament to his aspirations beyond Major League Cricket.
A Major Step for Washington Freedom
After four years of looking for a permanent home, the rezoning approval is a big step forward. While the stadium is far from a place where professional cricket can be played, the latest decision brings the project a step closer to reality for Washington Freedom.
The franchise now wants to establish a place where international standard cricket can grow along with community facilities and youth development. If the project is completed as planned, Frederick may be a major new cricket destination in the United States and will give Washington Freedom the home they have long sought and desired for many years.
