Zaheer Khan, the former India pacer, has joined the ownership team of the Jaffna franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) as the franchise starts a new chapter under the guidance of Anchor Sports AB. The sports ownership group, based in Stockholm, has bought the franchise and renamed it the Anchor Jaffna Kings.
Jaffna Franchise Gets New Ownership
The franchise, which was formerly called Jaffna Kings, is now under the ownership of Anchor Sports, as the group continues to grow in international cricket. The franchise will be co-owned by Anchor Sports owner Nagendra Siddoutam and Zaheer Khan.
The Antwerp Anchors are already playing in international cricket in the European T20 Premier League in Belgium and the Vancouver Anchors men’s and women’s team are already established in Canada Super 60 League. The Jaffna franchise is another addition to the group’s international cricket involvement.
Zaheer Khan Enters Sri Lankan Cricket as Owner
Zaheer Khan has a wealth of international cricket experience to his credit, which will be useful to the Jaffna team. The former India fast bowler has been actively engaged in professional cricket since his playing days and is now venturing into a new arena as a team owner.
Zaheer expressed his excitement about becoming part of Sri Lankan cricket and highlighted his admiration for the quality and variety of bowling talent produced by the country. The experience he gained could also be of great benefit to the young Sri Lankan players who are affiliated to the franchise.
Jaffna Strong LPL Legacy
Jaffna has become one of the most successful teams in the history of Lanka Premier League. The team has four championship titles to its credit in the tournament’s six-year history and has always been considered one of the top teams in the tournament.
The new ownership group will now focus on expanding upon that successful foundation and adding new vision and energy to the franchise.
LPL Welcomes Anchor Sports
The tournament rights-holding Innovative Production Group’s Chairman and CEO Anil Mohan welcomed Anchor Sports into the Lanka Premier League. He complimented the efforts of Jaffna in the competition and their outstanding performance since the inception of the league.
Mohan said he was confident that the new owners will be able to build on the success of Jaffna and continue to develop the franchise, while at the same time raising the overall standard of the Lanka Premier League.
Zaheer Experience Could Help Young Players
One of the key benefits of Zaheer Khan’s involvement could be his cricketing experience and knowledge. The former pacer has a first-hand experience of the technical and mental requirements of professional cricket at the highest level.
His involvement may provide a chance for young Sri Lankan players to learn from someone who has a lot of experience in international and franchise cricket. The LPL also value his contribution to the development of emerging talent.
Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League, welcomed Zaheer’s involvement and emphasized the importance of his experience and guidance to the young Sri Lankan players.
Jaffna Remains Among the Top LPL Teams
It is an opportune time in the ongoing LPL season. The Jaffna are in the top two of the LPL points table and are in the fight.
The team will now get more attention as they play under the new name of Anchor Jaffna Kings.
A New Era for Anchor Jaffna Kings
The signing is a significant new development for the Jaffna side. The international ownership experience of Anchor Sports and the cricketing knowledge/expertise of Zaheer Khan are a big plus for the organization.
The new owners will have to build on the success of the Anchor Jaffna Kings, who won the LPL four times, and keep the standards of the team alive, while at the same time coming up with a new long-term plan.
Zaheer Khan role as a franchise co-owner also provides an interesting twist to the Lanka Premier League and his presence may prove to be significant in the future of the franchise, on and off the field.
