Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault case in West Bengal. The wicketkeeper-batter was arrested by Hooghly police on the Calcutta High Court’s order. Porel has been accused by a medical student of sexual assault and allegedly exploiting her on the promise of marriage.
The grievance was lodged in June when the woman claimed they had been dating for about three years. The issue then went to the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the police to arrest the cricketer while the case was being investigated.
Porel Remanded to Police Custody
Porel was arrested Monday night and appeared in court Tuesday, Aug. 11. The court ordered him to be remanded in police custody for three days to enable the police to question him and further investigate the case.
Charges of rape, sexual assault and criminal intimidation have reportedly been lodged by police. It is also known that the case is related to provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. At this point the allegations are allegations and Porel has not been found guilty of any crime.
Complaint Filed by Medical Student
The woman alleged in the complaint that she had been dating Porel for about three years. She claimed the cricketer sexually exploited her after promising to marry her.
The complaint was made at Mogra Police Station on June 23. The issue escalated and the woman went to the Calcutta High Court, which issued a warrant for the arrest of Porel on July 20. The police then, on the court’s instructions, arrested the cricketer.
Police Seize Porel’s Mobile Phone
The mobile phone of Porel has also been seized during the investigation. The device was seized to stop the spread of photos of the complainant and to assist investigators in reviewing material that may be related to the case, reports said.
Hooghly police is going to conduct a wider investigation on the seizure of the phone. Investigators should review relevant electronic evidence and keep collecting information from those involved in the case.
Porel Cricket Career
Porel has made his mark as a domestic cricketer for Bengal and is also a part of the Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals. During his career, the wicketkeeper-batter has made 32 first-class matches and 35 IPL appearances.
His performances have made him a name in Indian domestic cricket and his association with Delhi Capitals has provided him with the experience at the highest level of Indian franchise cricket. But his immediate cricketing career has been thrown into doubt due to the ongoing legal case.
Investigation Continues
Now, the Hooghly police are still probing the case after Porel was arrested and appeared in court. The police will have three days for questioning him and gathering evidence in connection with the charges.
The case will now go through the legal system and additional developments are likely to follow as the investigation continues. The allegations against Porel have not been proven in court, and the final outcome will depend on the judicial process.
