The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has maintained its faith in its men’s managing director Rob Key, who chief executive Richard Gould has said he will play a key role in England’s long-term plans despite Brendon McCullum being sacked as Test head coach.
After McCullum left, Gould said Key’s job was “one of the most difficult in English sport” and that the former England batter was a “leader, experienced and knowledgeable of the domestic game.
Gould Gives Full Backing to Rob Key
Although England disappointing Test results have led to major changes within the coaching setup, Gould made it clear that the ECB has no plans to replace Key.
The chief executive has gained valuable experience in four years at the helm of Key and is the right man for the next step in England’s rebuilding process.
Gould says that Key’s cricket expertise, ability to communicate and knowledge of the English game make him the ideal man to lead the men’s team for the foreseeable future.
McCullum Removed After Poor Test Results
Brendon McCullum has been sacked as England’s Test coach after a tough spell of form, the ECB said.
England were beaten 4-1 in Australia in the Ashes series and 2-1 at home to New Zealand, leading the board to make changes in the red-ball format.
McCullum will retain his role as England’s white-ball head coach despite his Test job being stripped from him and is likely to coach them in the ODI series against India later this month.
Key Under Pressure After Difficult Decisions
Rob Key has been under growing pressure for a number of key decisions that he has made during his tenure.
He named McCullum Test coach in 2022 and added to his duties in all formats following Matthew Mott’s resignation as white-ball coach in 2024.
Key also gave his approval to England’s Ashes preparation plans, which were later criticised in the wake of the team’s heavy defeat in Australia.
He also implemented new team discipline rules earlier this year, such as curfew rules that were later controversial after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson got into a row after the first Test against New Zealand.
The ECB believes that despite those difficulties Key is the best man for the job of leading English cricket through the transition it is currently undergoing.
England Begin Search for New Test Coach
England have two big appointments to make after the departure of McCullum and former captain Ben Stokes who retired from international cricket earlier this summer.
The ECB is likely to choose a new Test head coach before deciding on the next captain for the team ahead of the three-Test home series against Pakistan which starts on 19 August.
Key is likely to be prominently involved in both appointments.
Gould: England’s System Is Still Strong
Gould admitted that England had had a bad run of form recently, but did not think the sport needed a complete overhaul.
He noted that the overall structure is healthy, citing the country’s robust county system, its talented player pathway, the increasing number of fans, modern facilities, and advanced support staff.
Gould also pointed to England’s recent ICC form, stating that the emphasis should be on improving the system in certain areas, not reconstructing it.
