Legendary coach brings an end to his historic run after leading CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns.
Stephen Fleming tenure as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has come to an end as the Indian Premier League (IPL) has officially announced his resignation.
The franchise announced the decision on Monday and both Fleming and CSK confirmed that the separation was agreed upon after a number of discussions.
End of a Historic Era
Fleming became a player for Chennai Super Kings in the first season of the IPL in 2008 and became the head coach in 2009. He has played an incredible 18-year career with the team and helped make CSK one of the most consistent and successful teams in world franchise cricket.
Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings won five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023) and two Champions League T20 titles (2010 and 2014). The team also has a record of 12 IPL playoff appearances and 10 IPL final appearances.
Fleming also coached Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 league in South Africa and Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket league, bringing his Super Kings coaching career to a close.
Fleming Reflects on His Journey
Fleming, in a heartfelt goodbye speech, acknowledged the franchise and its fans for almost 20 years of memories that will never be forgotten.
“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sports and I’m leaving with nothing but gratitude. I have been with CSK and had the privilege of celebrating memorable moments, facing challenging times and creating memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart.”
Rumours had been swirling around about Fleming’s future since the Chennai Super Kings had struggled in the IPL season, finishing in last place in 2025 and 8th in 2026.
CSK Pays Tribute to Legendary Coach
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said that Fleming was the pulse of the coaching setup of the franchise.
“Stephen Fleming has been the pulse of our coaching unit for nearly all the way to the present day, he helped define our identity, our vision, our quest for excellence and his impact on CSK will always be part of our legacy.”
Chief Executive Officer KS Viswanathan also commended Fleming’s leadership, noting his talent for fostering a culture of consistency, humility and teamwork.
What’s Next for Chennai Super Kings?
Fleming’s exit is the end of an indelible era, but Chennai Super Kings have yet to announce who will replace him. Batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons are also yet to be decided as the franchise charts a new course in the coming IPL season.
