Pretoria Capitals SA20 2027 Squad: Salt, Short and Russell Wildcard for the Final Rematch

Pretoria Capitals SA20 2027 squad is complete with 19 players, and the headline names tell a clear story. Phil Salt and Matthew Short arrived as pre-signings, Andre Russell joined as the wildcard, and a smart auction added experience without a wild spend. The result is a balanced group that goes straight back to the scene of the final from last season.

The Capitals finished as runners-up in the previous season, so the new season starts with a ready made test. Season 5 runs from 17 January to 21 February 2027, and the opener on 17 January brings a rematch against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St Georges Park in Gqeberha. The final is set for 21 February at Newlands in Cape Town, and that date gives every early result a sharp edge.

Final rematch opens season 5

The answer to when SA20 2027 starts is 17 January, and the fixture list wastes no time on drama. Pretoria Capitals travel to St Georges Park in Gqeberha to face Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the opener, and the pairing is a direct repeat of the final from last season. A strong start there would set the tone for the whole campaign, while a slow start would put early pressure on a new group.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals were level at 4 wins each ahead of the SA20 2027 final rematch opener, so the first game is far more than a routine start. The Capitals also know that a final rematch can swing on small moments, and the new signings were chosen to handle those moments with calm and power. Head coach Sourav Ganguly will want a settled plan from ball one, and the opener gives him an instant read on the balance of the squad.

Who is in Pretoria Capitals SA20 2027 squad? The 19 player group is Ackeem Auguste, Temba Bavuma, Josh Breed, Dewald Brevis, Connor Esterhuizen, Wihan Lubbe, Keshav Maharaj, Bayanda Majola, Lungi Ngidi, Bryce Parsons, Keemo Paul, Gideon Peters, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Phil Salt, Matthew Short, Rassie van der Dussen, Lizaad Williams and Codi Yusuf. The mix covers power at the top, pace through the middle overs and proven finishers for the closing overs.

The balance is the point. Phil Salt and Matthew Short give the top order early intent, Temba Bavuma adds calm and leadership experience, and Dewald Brevis brings young power that can change a game in a few overs. Lungi Ngidi and Lizaad Williams lead the pace options, Keshav Maharaj offers control with spin, and the lower order has finishers who can close a chase under pressure. The captain for the season is to be confirmed, so the leadership call remains one of the early stories to watch.

Auction buys, wildcard and retained core

How much did Pretoria Capitals spend at auction? The total was R1.3 million, and the spend was spread with clear intent. Rassie van der Dussen cost R500,000, while Temba Bavuma, Josh Breed, Ackeem Auguste and Keemo Paul each cost R200,000. That group adds experience at the top, fresh pace options and a proven all round option, without breaking the budget for the rest of the build.

What is the role of Andre Russell in this squad? He is the wildcard, and that tag fits his game perfectly. Russell can change a match with power hitting in the closing overs and can also deliver key overs with the ball when the pressure rises. Around him, 12 retained players give the group continuity, and head coach Sourav Ganguly has a core that already knows the dressing room culture. The captain for the season is to be confirmed, so the leadership picture will become clear closer to the opener.
